The North Fly Health Service Development Program & CMCA Middle and South Fly Health Program (NDFHSDP & CMSFHP) convened the first stakeholder meeting for 2018 in Port Moresby over two days, 9-10 May. The meeting was timed to follow the Western Province Development Forum held in Kiunga 18-20 April with the intent of informing partners about the new Western Province Government’s vision for health in the Province.
The meeting was chaired by the Program Manager, Mr Kelly Kewa and attended by 45 people who represented 28 different agencies delivering and supporting health services in Western Province. This was the first time many of the participating agencies had attended a NDFHSDP & CMSFHP Stakeholder meeting. Attendees included the Western Province Governor, Hon. Taboi Awi Yoto who outlined his government’s vision for improving health and provided direction for the many agencies supporting health in Western Province.
The meeting provided a forum for partners to learn about each other’s work, and discuss a number of priority initiatives, including, the establishment of the Western Province Provincial Health Authority, the Western Province Development Strategy 2018-2022 and the Western Province Strategic Health Service Development Plan 2017-2020.
Thirty presentations were delivered over the two days initiating wide-ranging discussion and providing greater clarity among all stakeholders about the current picture of health service provision in the Province and how a future ‘collective’ effort might optimise the resources available to assist the Government’s plan for strengthening the Western Province health system.
All present agreed to support the completion of the Western Province Health Service Strategic Plan, ensuring the plan aligns with the Western Province Development Strategy, and support the establishment of the PHA for Western Province.
The next stakeholder meeting will be held in the 4th quarter of 2018.
CMSFHP is funded by the CMCA portion of the Western Province People’s Dividend Trust Fund and NFHSDP is funded by Ok Tedi Mining Limited. Both programs are managed by Ok Tedi Development Foundation and implemented by Abt Associates.
